Re: [PLUG] FiOS & Linu

I use Cavalier for DSL and phone, and they are fine with my using
GNU/Linux, and have been for years. They included an "install CD"
with their package, but there docs had all the information I needed to
get it running without the install CD. I only had to call them once
for tech support, and the guy on the phone asked what version of
Windows I was running. I said I didn't run Windows, he asked which
version of Mac, and I said "Linux". He asked which distro, and would
I need assistance finding the IP and routing info :-)
Turns out they had a problem with a router, and gave me another IP
address (I have a static from them) so all was good.
IIRC from reading about the Slashdotted "I can't go to college online
because my laptop from Dell runs Ubuntu" brouhaha the Verizon rep in
TX said they support Linux just not with their install CD, which is
Windows only.
So I wouldn't shy away from telling them you run Linux or pretend that
you have a Windows box at your disposal. After all, if we don't make
ourselves heard and insist that something as "fundamental" as Internet
access from a major provider support our favorite OS then they can
always claim "lack of demand" for not supporting us with future
offerings. We are the paying customer, and can vote with our feet, as
they say. Verizon and every other service purveyor out there have a
dollars and sense interest in supporting paying customers, especially
customers that, IMHO, tend to be be low maintenance and technically
savvy, like say, PLUG members. :)

They sent me a self install package, but I could not run the CD with Linux (of course). They would not help me get on line, and I had no XP. I returned the equipment and stayed with my dialup (which I originally did via a cellphone modem at 14.4 (night minutes).

Never again did I find someone that would be "into" Linux like they were, and they later shutdown, saying it was due to the big competitors. Mindspring/Earthlink used to provide Linux support links (that they did not offer support for).
