Re: [PLUG] IRC / DNS Questions

Thanks Michael, & Elizabeth, for your help so far. I also think it might have something to do with being behind a NAT'ed/IDS Sonicwall appliance. I'm too tired tonight, but I'm going to temporarily place the computer before the firewall, with a real IP address, just to see what happens when I connect. Despite the host being on a DMZ, it just might be returning the IP address of the router WAN IP. Which is the as my host WAN IP. Or it could be a timing issue with regard to the firewall not responding quick enough for the IRC server. Either way placing the host before the firewall should prove this out. I'm connecting over SSL as well, but I don't think that should matter.

the connect I get is as follows:

Looking up IP number for irc.shoutcast.com:8000
Connection with irc.shoutcast.com:8000 (52960) established
*** Processing connection to irc.SHOUTcast.com
*** Looking up your hostname...
*** Checking Ident
*** Found your hostname
*** Got Ident response
*** CAP Not enough parameters
*** Welcome to the EFNet Internet Relay Chat Network xored
*** Your host is irc.SHOUTcast.com[205.188.234.121/8000], running version ircd-ratbox-3.0.1
*** This server was created Tue Mar 3 2009 at 21:30:49 GMT

The /whois I'm getting now is:
*** xored is xored@v-system.net (xor)
*** xored is on channels #dc-forums
*** xored is on IRC via server irc.SHOUTcast.com (HELL2O WORLD)
*** xored is using a secure connection
*** xored using host 75.147.85.146, actually
*** xored has been idle for 29 minutes and 34 seconds
*** xored signed on at August 19, 2009 8:03:22 PM
*** xored End of /WHOIS list.

the /who xored returns this:

*** 1603 1891 :Current local users 1603, max 1891
*** 47251 56182 :Current global users 47251, max 56182
#dc-forums xored v-system.net irc.SHOUTcast.com xored H :0 xor

I realize this is vanity more that anything else :-). But I'm just curious now. If it's a choice between security, and vanity, security will win the day.

Thanks
