I think this also greatly depends on where you're starting from.  If 
you're at Drexel/Penn you could probably be halfway to 69th street by 
the time you walk to the R6 platform.  You can only directly board the 
R6 if you're already in center city.  From USP you would ride the 
trolley all the way to 30th street just to get on the EL, so the 
difference timewise is smaller.

If you can board the EL at 34th I'd almost certainly recommend just 
taking it to 69th.

In any case, none of the options are all that bad at rush hour.  My 
bigger concern would be at night when frequency is everything.
