Re: [PLUG] Do you feel like you're a Linux dude(tte) in a 'Doze/Mac world?

The pithy ruminations from Floyd Johnson <fljohnson3@isp.com> on "[PLUG] Do you feel like you're a Linux dude(tte) in a 'Doze/Mac world?" were:

=> Afternoon, PLUGgers.
=>
=> I think this cafe's WiFi apparatus was giving me bum DHCP info. It seems
=> to have been set to give nameserver addresses further upstream than the
=> router (they were in the 71.242.0 and 71.252.0 blocks)-the router's IP

So, what's the problem with that? I mean, really, why do you want to use an overworked public wifi access point as your DNS resolver? The very best case it that it'll have cached some correct answers for common queries (www.google.com). More likely, it'll need to do a look-up anyway (slowing down your answer). Worse still, it may be doing DNS redirection (to advertisements in case of failed lookups, or as a MiTM hack).

=> being in the good ol' 192.168.1 block. It took me most of an hour to
=> figure out how to tell my Ubuntu boxlet the correct way to aim its DNS
=> queries right at the router in here (Tuscany Cafe just off Rittenhouse
=> Square).

Huh? What's wrong with using 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 or 198.6.1.2 or 198.6.1.3? Easy to remember, reliable, run by the Internet backbone cabal, so you can trust their responses.

=>
=> Do you guys find yourselves in similar moments, in which you're flying
=> the most sophisticated laptop amongst your fellow cafe patrons, and
=> having the worst time of the lot getting online? Or, on the other hand,
=> do you feel like hot stuff because you are able to essentially MacGyver
=> your machine to solve such problems?

Perhaps it's time to switch to decaf. :)

Mark
