I agree with Gavin,
I'm running EasyPeasy 1.5 (~Ubuntu 8.04) on my netbook.  I installed it when 8.04 was current.  Had to convert the repos to debian.

Running the openbox interface makes it blazingly fast compared to before.

If you scroll down the page I give a sourceforge download link to documentation for how to set up openbox the way I have it.

I have the EEE PC 900 from when it first came out (8.9" screen).  I like it because it has two finger scrolling like the Macs.
