I'd be interested in elaboration here. I'd consider dd highly
inefficient, but as long as you get all the devices involved you can't
go wrong with a complete bit-image of a device (assuming you restore
to a device of the same size/geometry/etc).
Of course, using a more appropriate tool to the filesystem is going to
be better all-around.
