Re: [PLUG] plug Digest, Vol 149, Issue 6 (idc about unity, sad about convergence)

I've never been a big fan of either gnome or unity. They tend to be resource heavy.

However, I'm very sad to see the idea of convergence die.

I was really hoping that phone manufacturers would jump onboard.

I would live to be able to have my phone double as a full Linux desktop when connected to a monitor and keyboard.

MaruOS does exactly this and is pretty awesome, but it only supports the nexus 5 which is dated and has awful battery life.

All I have to say is "Ding, dong, the witch is dead". When Unity moved the
window controls (close, max, min) to the upper left to the upper right, and
I accidentally closed windows due to the proximity to other controls, that
was when I stopped using Ubuntu and moved to alternatives.

What an awful idea, putting non-destructive controls (like the application
menu and dock) right next to destructive controls (like "close window").

I'm going to miss it, actually. But I've gotten used to Gnome3 on my Fedora
box at work, and it's not hard to move between the two once you tweak the
kb shortcuts.

The best thing coming from this is Ubuntu no longer trying to be the Apple
of the Linux world and doing more things that will cross-pollenate. I was
interested to see what would come of Mir vs Wayland, but (shrug).

Out of curiosity, what is it that people prefer about Cinnamon or
Gnome compared to Plasma? Or is it just that so few distros seem to
go the KDE way? I've never really liked Gnome all that much, but I'll
admit I've been primarily using KDE for quite a long time.

I have to admit I haven't used KDE in many years, but when it tried it
it was: OMG my eyes are bleeding, make it stop! There is too much going
on and too many things to configure (I know, the opposite of my whining
about Gnome3).

Cinnamon is just there, and it works and it's subtly feature-full but it
stays out of my way. I should note that the Mint18 LXDE is *almost* as
nice but requires *significantly* fewer resources.

That 10y/o Mini9 I talked about really struggled to run Unity, but it
runs Mint18 LXDE *really* well.

Mint & Cinnamon are also basically a drop-in replacement for Windows
(esp. XP), and while some may consider that a bug, it's been a great
feature for some of my family users I've switched.

Later,
JP
