You can't say that's necessarily the case.  It all depends on the
audience.  I've never heard of this Fringe Festival thing until just
now.  But being a computing geek, I know exactly what people are
talking about when they say "fringe", as in, the fringes of
development.

What's interesting is that I'd consider myself a computing geek and didn't make the same connection. I believe FringeDC uses it in the context of "unconventional." That said, it seems that Fringe is obviously not the best fit for a name (at least in Philadelphia). 3 different meanings seems too many.

deter people who would potentially be good additions to the community?

Not if the community _is_ about functional programming. It does if you want to talk about top-stitching.
 
My personal impression is that lambdas don't scare smart people ;-)

Until last week, I would have said the same.
