Interestingly, the first thing I thought of when I heard PhillyLambda was that it might be a LGBT techies group, ala Lambda Legal <http:// LambdaLegal.org>, Lambda.org, or the Lambda Literary Awards <www.lambdaliterary.org/>. Google tells me that lambda is actually a rather popular Greek letter, co-opted into service by everything from functional programming to AC/DC manufacturers. So what's in a name doesn't seem to matter as much as what's in the group description. Sounds like broadening the group is good because it's getting tricky to always have an FP-centric discussion, but no one wants it to go so far as to include the latest in top-stitching. Given the activity of the mailing list, there's little fear of a sewing invasion. Given the relatively non-scary nature of Lambdas and its tech association with some aspects of functional programming, I might propose leaving the name and adjusting the description to "Philly Lambda - This group is a place for Philadelphia-area tech enthusiasts to hang out and discuss interesting topics in functional programming, beer, and whatever the majority of members happens to find interesting."
