OK, perhaps broken font paths at worst, then, from the upgrade.  These
can make X fail, but I would expect to see an error message in one of
the logs.

Knoppix is essentially a Sid snapshot, although some of the packages
will have made it into testing by now.  

If you find anything unusual in your logs, it'll give us a a starting
point.  If you can't, try an strace (strace -f startx > x.log 2>&1)
