If you're used either ext2 or ext3, the proper tool to test a harddrive 
is e2fsck /dev/<drive id to linux> although the drive theoretically has 
to be unmounted to use e2fsck properly.

Figuring out what is causing your cycling message is tricky, you could 
have the wrong libraries installed, or have only portions of the 
necessary libraries installed as one example of what could cause your 
problem.  IOW, you might want to try for example looking on google in 
the groups section for your error message to see what others have found 
as the cause/solution with your present flavor of Linux.
