i find this is often the case, which is too bad because i really like
the program. it also comes on windows and os x, which is a bonus. it'd
be really cool if there were a way to get vlc to work with an installed
w32codecs package, but i've never been able to figure that out.

Somehow or other, I got it to work. vlc, mplayer, kaffeine will all play AVI files encoded with Divx v5, but only locally. If I click on an AVI file that I'm browsing on a Windows share, kaffeine complains of an unknown plugin. If I copy the file locally, open kaffeine, and tell it to play the local file, all is wonderful and I can watch.
