Somehow or other, I got it to work. vlc, mplayer, kaffeine will all play 
AVI files encoded with Divx v5, but only locally.  If I click on an AVI 
file that I'm browsing on a Windows share, kaffeine complains of an 
unknown plugin. If I copy the file locally, open kaffeine, and tell it 
to play the local file, all is wonderful and I can watch.
