I generally prefer (and would recommend when asked) to just pay for whatever hardware the vendor thinks should be attached to the other end rather than trying to second-guess them. BUT, cheaping out on the Ethernet chipset didn't matter with DSL or Cable speeds, while it clearly becomes relevant with FiOS. I happen to think, incidentally, that Verizon's doing a stellar job with technology.
