I also use itunes to browse my phone but this is a separate concern - I'll probably continue to use it for this. I just make sure that my outbound firewall doesn't let itunes send my selfies to apple or whatever.


I've always enjoyed using Amarok.  It's a KDE application but works in other DE so long as you install the UI framework (same could be said for GTK based apps in KDE or other).  It's got a slick interface for managing albums, artists, and podcasts.  It has a neat lyrics browser and wikipedia browser populated from the music playing.
