Re: [PLUG] Puzzling openssh problem

Debian (and related) is doing the "127.0.1.1" thing in /etc/hosts, but I'm not sure why. Perhaps a systemd thing?

Maybe check for IPA and hostname conflicts or unexpected values with something like:
egrep -iR "$HOSTNAME|localhost|127\.0| \
  /etc/host* /etc/ssh* ~/.ssh/config*

Thank you, you're right: the 127.0.1.1 is puzzling and I have no idea where it's coming from, because ip addr show clearly shows the IP address as 127.0.0.1. I may have to go in myself tomorrow to try to figure it out (right now one of our developers is in the office and I'm working remotely).

I have a really puzzling problem now in that ssh localhost does
not work (it says Connection closed by 127.0.1.1 port 22)

Is localhost defined in your ~/.ssh/config file?   I’m surprised
your localhost would be defined as 127.0.1.1.

Also, your ssh_config file may not allow you to open IPv6
    connections, whereas telnet clearly does.

Finally, check iptables rules for IPv4 localhost port 22.
