if you are running RedHat, pump is your dhcp client. pump has
approximately zero configuration, but it always insists on writing DNS
information into /etc/resolv.conf - unless of course verizon hasn't
created the appropriate information in the dhcp fields. maybe you can
ask them - also, pump outputs all that to the logs, so check
/var/log/messages for pump messages (and possibly post one here)

and presuming that your ethernet card is eth0, the file that you
really want is /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg=eth0. can you post
its contents?
