ah, i see. that's because pppd handles your stuff.
add the line

usepeerdns

to /etc/ppp/options, then do this:

mv /etc/resolv.conf /etc/ppp/resolv.conf
ln -s ppp/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf

i fully agree with you, redhat is a great and easy system to get
introduced to linux. i used it for a very long time when i realized
that its configuration and guis and all that is just too much like
micro$oft and switched to debian (via a very unsatisfactory stop at
suse).
