I'm guessing it's because xv has a rather restrictive 'personal use only' shareware license, which doesn't get along at all with debian's free software guidelines, which say it must be free for any use, personal or commercial. why it isn't in 'non-free' (where there are other programs of similar restrictions), i have no idea... however, here are two alternative image viewers (and their debian packages): xview (xloadimage) xzgv (xzgv) > > Mind you, this has become a matter of pride more than necessity, since > > my brother says he can open it and convert it to a different format.
