Teligent walked away from dishes and big nortel switches at
two center city locations that I know, leaving customers without
service.

A friend who uses Dish Network DSL (Telia) seems to bypass Verizon.

Unless you are using a wireless service, I think you are still
dependent on Verizon's technicians and Central Office
administration.  The Telecom Deregulation Act of 1996 seems to
have failed.
