At the time, I noticed that the release I was using (stable) did not have
current nvidia drivers, so I downloaded the source tarballs from their site
(well, partially binary), and followed the simple directions in them.
That's all.

I have since had it pointed out to me that there are current nvidia drivers
in debian unstable, and it would be better to grab those.

That's why I bought Nvidia.

While Nvidia releases binary only drivers, and not source drivers,
they do release drivers. ATI releases specs so that fully GPLed source
drivers can be written, which is excellent, but they don't release their
own drivers. So it takes longer for them to happen. I don't think the
8500 is fully supported under Linux yet, for these reasons.
