What are the contents of /usr/share/apps/switchdesk/Xclients.kde ? That
is not the binary, but presumably some wrapper script. You're running
the binary directly, but using $SHELL -c to do so, which seems
unnecessary. I would either create a wrapper script, or just use exec
$binary directly.

[root@rodney arthur]# cat /usr/share/apps/switchdesk/Xclients.kde

   # Created by Red Hat Desktop Switcher
   exec startkde

There is a gui app called switchdesk that writes to this file whenever you want to set another desktop as default.
