To give a timely example, we had a Dell PowedEdge 1650 with attached RAID die over the weekend. Talking to Dell today, they don't make the machine any more, so they're going to replace it with a 18xx or 19xx, which uses a different RAID controller with different data format, so we get to lose the data. Well, actually, we have a backup, and they're going to drop off a new motherboard temporarily so we can get the machine running until the replacement arrives... But still, it would have been nice to just take the drives out of the 1650 shell and put them into the new shell without needing to rebuild the OS and copy all the data off/on and all.
