fakeraid currently sucks, but standardizing the disk layout could make it into a viable technology. The benefit is on the low-end of the storage market. A 3ware SATA RAID system costs less than a SCSI RAID system and a "fakeraid" card costs a fraction of the 3ware card. The difference between ~$50 and ~$300 is significant to some people. By standardizing the disk data format, you don't need to have crummy BLOBs loaded into your kernel because kernel drivers can be written to the standard. With open kernel drivers and a fast CPU, the fakeraid setup could outperform the 3ware setup for less money. What's wrong with that?
