Um. If one of my 3ware 9506s dies I will replace it with (wait for
it) another 3ware 9506, and restore the RAID set config, assuming it
doesn't just come cleanly off the disks (which it "should"), from
the saved config that's on disks not managed by those and that's
backed up.

If I'm replacing a *failed* RAID card... why wouldn't I replace it
with one from at least the same vendor? (It is entirely possible
to migrate from a 3ware 8xxx or 7xxx series controller to a 9xxx
one... no reason to expect that to change.)

I don't know why you are so negative about this.

fakeraid currently sucks, but standardizing the disk layout could make
it into a viable technology. The benefit is on the low-end of the
storage market. A 3ware SATA RAID system costs less than a SCSI RAID
system and a "fakeraid" card costs a fraction of the 3ware card. The
difference between ~$50 and ~$300 is significant to some people.

By standardizing the disk data format, you don't need to have crummy
BLOBs loaded into your kernel because kernel drivers can be written to
the standard. With open kernel drivers and a fast CPU, the fakeraid
setup could outperform the 3ware setup for less money.

What's wrong with that?
