Re: [PLUG] RAID cards

fakeraid currently sucks, but standardizing the disk layout could make it into a viable technology. The benefit is on the low-end of the storage market. A 3ware SATA RAID system costs less than a SCSI RAID system and a "fakeraid" card costs a fraction of the 3ware card. The difference between ~$50 and ~$300 is significant to some people.

By standardizing the disk data format, you don't need to have crummy
BLOBs loaded into your kernel because kernel drivers can be written to
the standard. With open kernel drivers and a fast CPU, the fakeraid
setup could outperform the 3ware setup for less money.

If you're planning to use fakeraid under Linux the general consensus is to use Linux software raid ("md") instead. There is your compatibility right there -- the disks can be transported to any Linux system. Linux software RAID will perform better and provide more control from the running system. It is my theory this is why the fakeraid implementations do not make it a priority to provide Linux drivers -- it is primarily geared towards Windows users.
