For those who are curious, it's actually a cartoon from the New Yorker. I still don't know exactly what the format was, only that an old copy of JPEGView, QuickTime 6.0 under Mac OS X 10.1.5, but not all versions of QT, can open it. I have it in gif, jpeg, and png now...
