For what it's worth, I have a Nexus One, and both wifi tethering and USB tethering work flawlessly in Ubuntu and Windows 7. If I'm not mistaken, it also was a breeze in OS X (10.6 to be specific), but someone else was using my phone to test, so do your own research there. Both Ubuntu and W7 required zero configuration for USB tethering... I just clicked it on, plugged it on, and boom, had internet!

For the record, I am running the CyanogenMod custom OS on my phone, but a coworker recently bought a Nexus One that shipped with Android 2.2, and tethering was a snap for him, too. I believe it's only a bit of a bear for 2.1, as Lee mentioned.

On Sprint, the tether and access point options are in the phone, regardless of your plan, but are disabled if you don't have the $30/month option.

I have tethering on my work BB plan, but Verizon's data is so slow compared to Sprint. Plus, getting it to work on Linux with the ppp dialer never seems reliable. I hope easy tether works well.
